Grizzly Bear

Ursus arctos horribilis

Appearance

Grizzly bears are…well…grizzly. This term comes from the pale tips of their brown fur that serve to make the bear larger and “grizzled”. These bears are big too, with adult males weighing in at well over 800 pounds

Diet

Famously omnivorous, the grizzly bear will eat all manner of plants and animals. From dirt grubs to elk and from grass to berries, virtually nothing is off the menu.

Where they can find them, grizzlies seem to very much enjoy fish. These bears are known to congregate at rivers and snag salmon as they jump up rapids and falls.

Regardless of the source, grizzly bears need to eat a LOT. With hibernation for Alaskan populations lasting up to six months, bears often bulk 800-1200 pounds during the warmer months.

Range

While the grizzly bear used to roam all across the Western North American continent, human expansion has seen this range reduced to a fraction of what it was. Once spanning from Canada to Mexico, fewer than 2,000 grizzly bears exist in the wilds of the continental United States today.
